Fabrizio Romano shares if Tottenham could sign Wilfried Gnonto in January transfer window
Fabrizio Romano says Wilfried Gnonto departing Leeds United in January “could be a possibility” amid suggestions Tottenham are interested.
The Italy international remained at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window after Leeds rejected multiple offers from Everton.
According to a report carried by Caught Offside [19 November], Tottenham are now interested in a possible swap deal involving Joe Rodon.
In an update on his Daily Briefing platform [20 November], Romano said: “[Gnonto’s] departure from Leeds could be a possibility this January.
“He could leave but depends on the proposal and also negotiating with Leeds is never easy.
“Despite rumours, I have no confirmation of Tottenham links at this stage.”
Stance has changed
Keeping hold of Gnonto in the summer, when offered close to £26million by Everton [Shamoon Hafez], was a massive statement of intent.
However, speculation regarding the Italian’s future continues ahead of the window reopening in six weeks’ time.
The fact Leeds rejected what they did in August suggests they value him closer to £30m, or possibly even more.
If there is any truth to the Rodon swap rumours, then, it would likely have to be a player-plus-cash offer to persuade Leeds to sell.
If the Whites can negotiate a deal that would see them keep Rodon – worth, say, around £20m – plus a cash sum, that would be great business.
Besides, Gnonto cannot even get into Daniel Farke’s preferred starting line-up right now, whereas Rodon is a key member of the back four.
Unlike in the summer, it may well be that those high up at Elland Road are not as desperate to keep hold of Gnonto if an offer is tabled.
In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay says the club “are at pains to stress” that an injury sustained by a first-team regular is not related to a previous long-term issue.
