Leeds United, Newcastle and Brentford keen on Manchester City youngster Shea Charles

Leeds United and Newcastle are reportedly in the race to sign Manchester City youngster Shea Charles in the summer transfer window.

According to the Daily Mail [10 April], Brentford and Bundesliga giants Borrusia Dortmund are also keeping tabs on the 19-year-old.

City want to retain the Northern Ireland international’s services but are aware of the growing interest in securing the defender’s services.

Jack of all trades

As described by the club’s official website, “A committed central midfielder with an excellent passing range, Shea’s versatility has enabled him to also feature at right-back and in central defence.

Charles is undoubtedly one of the brightest sparks in their academy but given how stacked their first team is and the millions they spend every season, the chances of him breaking through are slim.

If they do not win the Premier League or the Champions League, Pep Guardiola will be even more demanding in the hunt for players to get them over the line for next season.

This will see the 19-year-old further slipping in the pecking order and he may not really want that.

This could result in City doing what they did with Darko Gyabi last summer or even Romeo Lavia as they added a buy-back clause in his contract.

For Leeds, it does make sense if he’s ready to break into the first team as he can play three important positions and could be a good option to have on the bench.
