Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips slated by talkSPORT caller

Kalvin Phillips has been described as “overrated” by a talkSPORT caller in a bizarre rant that left Andy Goldstein and Jason Cundy baffled.

Kevin the Luton fan ripped into both Declan Rice and Phillips and claimed that he wouldn’t have them at Luton Town.

This seems like an incredible thing to say especially given just how good Phillips has been for England, but Kevin is not a fan.

He said: “Rice and Phillips. I think they’re the most overrated midfielders I’ve ever seen.

“If they rocked up at Luton Town, I would be fuming.

“There’s better talent in the [England] midfield sitting at home.”

In response Cundy asked Kevin about Luton’s midfield options: “Who’ve you got in the middle of the park for Luton?”

While Goldstein asked Kevin who he would play in the centre of midfield and was confused by the suggestion of playing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as a holding midfielder.

“Name them [players better than Phillips and Rice].

“Oxlade-Chamberlain as holding midfielder?

“You said ‘you’d rather have Oxlade-Chamberlain playing there’, which suggests to me you’re talking about where Rice and Phillips currently play.”

Incredible take

Considering Phillips is in England’s top 11 players at the Euros so far with a 6.91 WhoScored rating, you could argue that the 25-year-old deserves to be included in Gareth Southgate’s team.

Also, he did provide the assist in the opening group stage win over Croatia, which set England on their way.

He has also formed a fantastic partnership with Rice in the centre of midfield, and it is clear that Southgate is a big fan, so there is no way that Phillips is overrated and he deserves to be playing for England [official England podcast].

It also shouldn’t be forgotten how good Phillips was for the Whites in the 2020/21 season as he turned in consistently good performances to ensure Leeds secured a top ten finish [WhoScored].

So apart from all of those reasons, Kevin is right.

In truth, this seems like an incredibly bad take, and it is clear that Phillips is not overrated and fits into England’s best XI right now.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are set to add another player in the next 24 hours as their summer rebuild continues.
