Gary Rowett delivers verdict on Leeds United loanee Charlie Cresswell
Gary Rowett is singing the praises of Leeds United loanee Charlie Cresswell, who has impressed him since joining Millwall on loan this season.
Creswell made a bright start to life at The Den but was left out of Rowett’s squad for the previous four Championship fixtures before Saturday’s 2-1 win over West Brom.
The Lions boss believes Leeds will be pleased with how Cresswell returns to Elland Road after his loan spell with the club ends and says the defender has shown “resilience” amongst adversity.
“Cressy would have 100 per cent been frustrated being left out of the squad, but as a manager, you have to make unpopular decisions at times,” said Rowett as quoted by londonnewsonline.
“He has shown character and resilience, and he will benefit from it in the long term – that’s my personal opinion.
“I think that Leeds will be pleased with the fact that the loan has had different facets to it. At some point, he will go back to Leeds a much more well-rounded player.”
Leeds United could recall the centre-back from his loan spell with Millwall in January, The Athletic’s Phil Hay has admitted.
And this is a move fans would love to see, Cresswell is an absolute unit and one of the prime examples of elite talents that the club have produced.
His time in the Championship has been very up and down and if he isn’t getting the game time needed to improve he needs to be shipped back to Elland Road.
However, it seems an injury to Millwall defender Shaun Hutchinson may halt any hopes of a Cresswell and a Leeds reunion for this campaign.
Rowett now looks like he might utilise Cresswell due to the injury, which is a double-edged sword for the Whites.
Cresswell should now get a solid run of games in the Championship which will only help him improve, but it will unlikely see him return to Elland Road soon.
