Leeds United legend John Giles drops big Kalvin Phillips move to Man City view

Leeds United legend John Giles believes that Kalvin Phillips will be able to showcase his talent on the attacking front if he joins Manchester City.

The England international has been heavily linked with a move away from the Elland Road in the upcoming transfer window.

Giles, while talking to Off The Ball, suggested that under Pep Guardiola, Phillips can enhance his attacking performances.

“Many people talk about Phillips being a defensive-minded player. However, he could showcase his ability a lot more,” Giles told Off The Ball. “Pep Guardiola will definitely be demanding a lot more from him.

“If I was his manager, I would tell that that potential is there in him, but he should a bit more to dominate the opposition.”

Perfect Rodri Partner

With Fernandinho’s days numbered and speculation surrounding Bernardo Silva’s future, it makes sense as to why Pep Guardiola would love to engineer a move for Phillips.

The England international is the kind of midfielder that can be a solution to many problems. He can play in the defensive midfield position (where Rodri plays) and can also create a pivot with him in the middle.

As we see in the national team, he plays in a pivot with Declan Rice that makes England’s midfield very difficult to bypass.

Apart from that, he can also play as a box-to-box midfielder between Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne.

Even though the Belgian will be a regular starter for City and be the main creative outlet, Phillips has also proved that he is more than an able passer of the balls if he gets given time and space.

In his first season in the Premier League, the Leeds midfielder had the highest number of long passes for the club.

Those qualities prove why Leeds must do all they can to ensure that their star midfielder will stay at the Elland Road for at least another season.
