Junior Firpo set for Leeds United stay despite January transfer news from Elland Road - Phil Hay

Junior Firpo is set to stay at Leeds United despite the club’s intentions to bring in another left-back in the January transfer window, according to the Athletic’s Phil Hay.

Firpo has been at Elland Road for 18 months now but has failed in his attempts to secure a regular first-team spot under Jesse Marsch.

Despite this, Hay confessed that Firpo remains part of Marsch’s “plans” even though the club want to bring in a left-back who fits into the anticipating talent bracket in January.

“The club want a left-back and are weighing up younger prospects who fall into their ‘anticipating talent’ bracket,” claimed Hay as quoted by the Athletic.

“As he has for most of the season, Pascal Struijk is expected to continue in that role when matches begin again and any new addition would arrive as competition to the Dutchman.”

“Firpo remains part of Marsch’s plans, but in 18 months he has not played well enough or been available enough for Leeds to consider his role properly covered.”

Needed.

Hopefully, this isn’t some form of a cop-out from the Leeds United hierarchy in their quest to sign a new left-back in the January transfer window.

It’s all well and good keeping Firpo about, but if he hasn’t proved to Marsch that he’s good enough for a starting spot in 18 months, it’s unlikely he will any time soon.

Struijk in all fairness has done a solid job filling in the position, but that’s where the problem lies, he’s “filling in”, it isn’t his natural position.

He’d be better utilised in the centre of Leeds’ defence, something which is arguably the problem area of the team at the moment.

To do this though, the club needs to sign a left-back, someone who is comfortable playing week in and week out in the harsh Premier League calendar.

Surely, Victor Orta and co have analysed the market now and come up with a short list of talents to approach once the January transfer window opens.

Let’s face it, anyone sounds better than Firpo right now.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are aiming to get this “human wrecking ball” out of Elland Road in January.
