Leeds United join race to sign Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien

Leeds United are “ready to pounce” on Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien in the summer, according to a report from TeamTalk.

The Whites have been heavily linked with a move for the energetic midfielder in recent transfer windows, and it seems they haven’t given up on him as yet.

The midfielder’s future could be determined as early as next week, as he is likely to leave if Huddersfield fail to secure promotion to the Premier League.

The 23-year-old has a release clause in his contract that could allow him to leave for around £12 million.

Factors

O’Brien has once again been one of the stand-out performers in the Championship this season.

Leeds have tracked him since the time of Marcelo Bielsa. Bolstering the midfield was necessary, but the Argentine failed to do so – a decision that has horribly backfired this season.

Huddersfield are in the play-offs and if they fail to secure promotion, O’Brien could be targeted by several Premier League clubs. His future now largely depends on Huddersfield’s quest for promotion.

O’Brien has scored three goals and provided three assists in the current season, and has been a constant force in midfield for the club.

Speculations are rife that Kalvin Phillips will leave the club at the end of the season, but the England international is likely to stay put if the Whites avoid the drop.

The price quoted for the midfielder is well within the budget, but any potential move to Elland Road will largely depend on where Leeds stand at the end of the season.

If they drop down to the Championship, they have to re-think their transfer plans.
