Leeds United injury news as Wilfried Gnonto back today for assessment

Leeds United attacker Willy Gnonto will arrive back at Elland Road today (Monday, 27 March) for an “urgent assessment” on the ankle injury he sustained for Italy during the international break, according to James Marshment.

Gnonto, 20, was awarded a rare start by Italy boss Roberto Mancini in their Euro 2024 qualifier on Sunday night (26 March) but lasted just 20 minutes before being forced off the pitch with an ankle injury.

TEAMtalk editor Marshment took to Twitter on Monday to provide an update on the Italian’s injury ahead of Leeds’ Premier League fixture against Arsenal on Saturday (1 April).

He wrote: “Willy Gnonto will arrive back in Leeds for urgent assessment on the ankle injury sustained during Italy’s match on Sunday.

“Max Wober also due back after suffering a thigh problem in the Austria game.

Big blow

Just when Leeds United fans thought their side had started to find some attacking continuity, they have been dealt a bitter, bitter blow.

Gnonto has been key to almost every strong Leeds performance this season, and his absence could have major implications on the club’s fight against relegation.

The youngster has looked like an absolute bargain after moving to Elland Road last summer, and it would come as no surprise to see several Champions League clubs look to sign him in the summer.

However, if his injury is a lengthy one, it won’t just affect his future but potentially also the club’s Premier League future.

Alongside Max Wober, who was also forced off with an injury on international duty, Javi Gracia will have to shuffle the troops for the trip to the Emirates Stadium this weekend.

If the Spaniard’s job wasn’t already hard enough, he has been dealt another sizeable hurdle to overcome.

In other Leeds United news, the club are ready to offer a new contract to one first-team star whose deal is up in 2024.
