Leeds United ready to offer Rodrigo new contract, player stance shared

Leeds United are prepared to offer Rodrigo Moreno a new contract at Elland Road to keep him at the club beyond 2024, according to Ben Jacobs.

The Spaniard is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract at the club and is having one of the best seasons of his career, despite the team battling against relegation.

And according to Jacobs, who was speaking to teamTALK (24 March), the player is prepared to stay at the club so long as they avoid the drop down to the Championship this season.

“So Rodrigo is out of contract at the end of next season, and from the Leeds perspective they would like to keep him at the Club beyond June 2024,” Jacobs said.

“But he is, of course, 32 years of age, which is always a consideration for any football club.

“But Rodrigo has been basically Leeds’ most in-form player when fit. And it’s almost quite rare when you’re struggling to have a player that could get 15-plus Premier League goals this season. So if he does that and Leeds stay up, then those goals will make all of the difference.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Leeds look to extend Rodrigo’s contracts by a year. He certainly deserves it based on the form that he’s in.

“And, as I understand it, if Leeds stay up, the player is quite prepared to stay as well.”

Huge

At the start of this season it was fair to suggest that not many people would care too much if Rodrigo had left the club following the arrivals of Wilfred Gnonto, Luis Sinisterra and Brenden Aaronson in attack.

But he has proven himself to be incredibly valuable to the team under both Jesse Marsch and now Javi Gracia, and fans would surely now be gutted to see him leave.

His age is definitely a factor and should be considered if any new contract is dished out, but there is no doubting that he has earned a new deal with his performances – especially if Leeds stay in the Premier League.

Should we get relegated then it won’t be a surprise to anyone that he’ll leave for another top flight club, likely abroad back in Spain, and fans will wish him well.

He’s given his all this season and that can’t be doubted, so hopefully that will bring survival and an extended stay at the club for everyone to celebrate.

In other Leeds news, the club are ready to write off a £30m agreement according to reports.
