Leeds United Ilias Akhomach move at risk of Club Brugge hijack amid Elland Road jeopardy
Club Brugge still consider Ilias Akhomach “an option” despite Leeds United reportedly closing in on the Barcelona youngster, according to Voetbalkrant.
Mundo Deportivo claim (14 January) the Whites are close to finalising a deal for the 18-year-old with his contract set to expire in the summer.
However, Voetbalkrant (15 March) suggest Club Brugge still consider the Spanish winger a viable target, with Leeds still at risk of relegation to the Championship.
“He seemed on his way to Leeds United in the Premier League, but with the English club close to relegation to The Championship, Akhomach would still be an option,” wrote the Belgium news outlet.
“Whether the player himself wants to follow his teammate Barbera is the question. He also does not come to a new deal in Barcelona, but in addition to Leeds United, European top teams such as Sevilla and AC Milan would also ask for his signature.”

It’s no surprise to see Leeds’ league status impact their move for the Barcelona youngster. The threat of Championship football is effecting the club now and the board will have various targets and budgets depending on the league they find themselves in.
The links to Akhomach are refreshing. Leeds have made a habit of poaching younger players from other clubs’ academies and it’s proven to be an excellent route to go down. Sonny Perkins, Darko Gyabi, Mateo Joseph and Sam Greenwood have all been signed as opposed to coming through the Elland Road youth system.
He would certainly be an exciting addition if he did make the move to England. Signing a younger player from abroad is a low-risk piece of business. His wages would be low, there’s no transfer fee involved, and his potential ceiling would be high.
There’s a lot to like about this signing. Let’s hope Leeds are in a position to finalise this deal come the end of the season.
In other Leeds news, the club are set to finalise a first-team transfer this month with negotiations over a contract ongoing.
