Leeds United: Hamza Choudhury shares Leicester promotion verdict after win v West Brom
Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury explained that the four-point gap to Leeds United was “massive” for the Foxes after they beat West Brom 2-1 on 20 April.
Their victory at the King Power saw them bridge a gap between themselves and the chasing pack, with Leeds the first team outside of the automatic promotion places.
Leeds will travel to Middlesbrough on 22 April in a bid to cut the gap, but in doing so will provide Leicester with a game in hand. A loss would enable to Foxes to further extend their advantage.
When asked about the four-point gap to Leeds [Yorkshire Evening Post, 20 April], the midfielder responded: “Massive. The gaffer has been going on that each game is a cup final.
“But we take one at a time and today was another one and thankfully we came out on top. We put it to bed now, we have got another cup final on Tuesday and we see where we are then.”
Automatic promotion race hotting up for Leeds United
With Daniel Farke’s side currently third in the Championship, they know they will have to win the rest of their games and hope either Leicester or Ipswich slip if they are to achieve promotion via the automatic places this season.
Failure to do so will see them qualify for the playoffs, where Leeds historically have suffered, and they will want to avoid the uncertainty and chaos element that comes along with the knockout competition.
Southampton’s surprise loss against Cardiff eased the pressure on Leeds from behind, where a win would have seen the Saints level on points after equal games, albeit with a significantly worse goal difference – something Leeds boast as a huge advantage.
Their goal difference also trumps that of Ipswich, meaning the two-point gap between the two sides is all Leeds would need to close to leapfrog their rivals. However, they will want to do so with more certainty, winning their games while hoping Ipswich don’t.

The promotion race in the Championship has been hotting up since the turn of the year, and while the title is slightly out of reach as things stand thanks to Leicester’s win, the pressure remains on for automation promotion.
