Leeds United goalkeeper Dani van den Heuvel returns to training after six month injury layoff
Leeds United young goalkeeper Dani van den Heuvel has posted an Instagram message stating he has returned to the first-team training squad in Spain, just six months after a serious car crash.
The 19-year-old Dutchman has returned to action after being part of a car accident that led to the young stopper suffering broken vertebrae in August.
With Illan Meslier and Kristoffer Klaesson both missing from the training camp, Van den Heuvel and Joel Robles will provide cover in the goalkeeping department.
The shot-stopper shared a post on Instagram stating his delight at returning to action under manager Jesse Marsch in Spain this week.
His post said: “The last six months I have been working on my recovery due to a car accident.
“Now I’m back and I feel stronger than ever. It feels good to be back on the pitch and train with the boys again. Thanks to all the people that have been helping me the last 6 months.”
This recent update is fabulous news for both Leeds and the youngster himself, after sustaining what could have been a serious career-threatening injury.
The post shows him back in full flow, diving for shots and completing goalkeeping drills, highlighting he is now ready for game-time again.
The Whites signed the youngster in 2020, and Van den Heuvel will now be looking to impress and extend his contract, which otherwise ends in 2023.
Obviously, it would be assumed that the goalkeeper will still have to train for several weeks before regaining match sharpness, but he will hopefully be putting the Leeds shirt on as soon as possible.
With Meslier, Klaesson, and Robles above him in the pecking order for the first team, he is likely to continue training with the youth sides once the Premier League returns on Boxing Day.
In time, it would be brilliant to see the Dutchman succeed at Elland Road, with Marsch in desperate need of a backup first-team goalkeeper to Meslier.
