Leeds United free to table formal bid for Portuguese defender Diogo Monteiro

Leeds United are looking to wrap up a deal for Portuguese defender Diogo Monteiro before the January transfer deadline on Tuesday (31 December), according to Phil Hay.

Writing for The Athletic (28 January), Hay reported that the centre-back turned 18 on Saturday (28 January), and the Whites are now free to table a formal bid for him today.

The youngster, who plays for Servette in Switzerland, is a highly-rated defender but he would be added to the Under-21 side initially.

“Leeds are also looking to wrap up a deal for Portuguese defender Diogo Monteiro ahead of the January deadline,” wrote Hay for The Athletic.

“The centre-back, who plays for Servette in Switzerland, turned 18 today, freeing Leeds to table a formal offer to bring him to the UK.”

More addition

If the transfer window ends right now, Jesse Marsch should not have any complaints.

The club needed to sign a left-back and a striker, and Victor Orta did a terrific job to sign two quality players. One thing is pretty clear – the Whites board are ready to back their manager despite underwhelming results.

What is important to note here is that the club showed their ambition in the market. They broke club-record transfer to sign Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim.

The Whites are now looking to add one or two more players towards the end of the window.

Leeds could have done without signing a midfielder, but the club felt another top-quality player in central midfield won’t do any harm, following the departure of Mateusz Klich who left the club this month to join DC United.

Hay has also reported on 28 January that the Whites are in talks with Juventus over a deal for midfielder Weston McKennie. Hopefully, they can reach an agreement for the 24-year-old midfielder. The results must improve now.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites appear to be on the cusp of another January signing as a player’s agent jets into the United Kingdom to conduct final transfer talks.
