Leeds United flop Helder Costa could get his second chance in pre-season

Helder Costa may get his final lifeline at Leeds United this summer as he is set to join Jesse Marsch’s squad for pre-season, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The Angolan international will return to training next week along with the rest of the Whites internationals who have been granted an extended break as a result of the additional games they have played over the summer.

Marsch is set to take his squad to Australia on 10 July and despite a transfer away from Elland Road not being ruled out at this stage, Costa could well have a seat on the plane.

The 28-year-old remains a popular figure among the players at Thorp Arch despite spending the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Valencia in La Liga where he scored zero goals.

This pre-season tour is going to give Marsch the chance to make his mind up on Costa’s future at the club after Marcelo Bielsa had made it evidently clear that he thought the Angolan wasn’t good enough by sending him to Spain.

No thanks

In a weird kind of way, it’s refreshing to see the American is willing to give everybody a fair chance to impress him before he makes up his mind which will be a big boost to the entire playing squad.

But in Costa’s case, he should have already seen how little he has impacted the Premier League and his dreadful performances continued in La Liga too.

With Jack Harrison, Dan James and Rodrigo all capable of playing on the wing for the Whites, there doesn’t appear to be a place in the team that Costa can fall into without another extreme injury crisis.

We also have Crysencio Summerville desperate for game time having dominated the Under-23s scene at Thorp Arch last season and that doesn’t include any potential incomings either.

Now is not the time to be revisiting old roads. We need to start forging a new path and we can’t begin to do that if we’re going to be keeping hold of a player as ineffective as Costa.

In other Leeds United news, this winger on the opposite end of the scale to the Angolan is delaying his transfer decision as he waits for his dream move to become available.
