Leeds United face Leicester City competition in race to hire Steven Gerrard

Leicester City are looking to rival Leeds United as the Foxes look to hire Steven Gerrard as their new manager, according to The Sun.

The Sun reported on Sunday 4 June that the 43-year-old is on the wanted list of the East Midlands club. It’s believed the former Rangers boss wants to get back into management after being sacked by Aston Villa in October 2022.

Gerrard’s representatives are understood to be close to Leicester, meaning the Foxes have a strong chance of luring him to the King Power Stadium.

The Whites had been looking to hire Gerrard after Sam Allardyce left the club. The Telegraph reported on 2 June that the Liverpool legend was interested in taking the Elland Road vacancy.

Blessing in disguise

If Leicester appoint Gerrard it will be a blessing in disguise. His stint at Rangers made him look far more accomplished than he actually is. It doesn’t take a lot to be successful at the Gers, or across Glasgow at Parkhead. He did well to manage the expectation level and pressure at Ibrox and secure a Scottish Premiership, but that was about it.

He was found out badly at Aston Villa. The Premier League was a step too far for Gerrard. He has to be looking for a Championship job – but Leeds isn’t the right fit.

Leeds need a manager who is proven. An immediate return to the Premier League has to be the board’s first thought. It may come as a surprise, but someone of Scott Parker’s pedigree could be an option. The former Bournemouth boss has gained promotion twice from the second tier when backed effectively.

He may not be a glamourous name, but he certainly knows how to get a side out of the Championship.

In other Leeds United news, the future of one Whites-linked manager is now up in the air after a high-level resignation at his current club.
