Carlos Corberan future up in the air at West Brom amid Leeds United speculation

Carlos Corberan’s future as West Brom manager is up in the air amid speculation linking him with a move to Leeds United, according to Rob Gurney.

The doubt surrounding his Baggies future comes following the news that West Brom CEO Ron Gourlay will leave the club this summer.

The Whites are long-term admirers of Corberan, who has a release clause in his Baggies contract, according to The Mirror (20 May).

“Gourlay did have a close working relationship with Carlos Corberan, and Corberan himself has talked at length several times about how close their working relationship was,” Gurney said on BBC Sounds.

“When there was interest from Leeds before Javi Gracia got the job and then of course Sam Allardyce finished the season, there was talk of Corberan returning to Leeds because of course he worked there previously under Marcelo Bielsa.

“Corberan got himself a new contract after 13 games only in charge of Albion as a result of that Leeds interest. One of the main reasons was because of the working relationship that he had with Ron Gourlay.

“The news of Gourlay’s departure has to throw, for me, Corberan’s future up into the air as well.”

Exciting opportunity

While Leeds need to take their time to get the right boss in place, and there are ownership and football operation issues to solve too, it is understandable a swift appointment would be preferable to get their summer shake-up underway.

Leeds’ relegation does obviously limit their options to an extent, with several names weighing up whether they would want to take over a club that has dropped into the second tier and is about to go through a pretty significant rebuild.

Corberan is, however, a name that would undoubtedly excite Leeds fans given the job he has done at West Brom, a club not unlike Leeds that has had its off-field issues to contend with.

Baggies fans will be desperate to hold on to their talented boss, but he could be persuaded with a lucrative deal at Elland Road, especially given the standing he would hold with Leeds fans if he was able to emulate Bielsa and earn promotion to the Premier League.

In other Leeds United news, one journalist has predicted an Elland Road transfer boost with two senior men tipped to stay at the club.
