Leeds United: Elland Road board swamped by manager in talks before Daniel Farke move

The Leeds United board were swamped by lengthy presentations during the search for a new manager before Daniel Farke simplified the process, according to Phil Hay.

The Whites appointed the former Norwich City boss ahead of the 2023/24 season, which has turned out to be a brilliant signing at Elland Road as Leeds look to claim promotion back to the Premier League.

Leeds are currently unbeaten at home, boasting 14 wins from 18 matches, and are just two points behind Leicester City at the top of the Championship following the 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday 8 March.

Writing for The Athletic on Saturday (9 March), Hay said: “Everyone else in the process to find the club’s manager last summer had adopted the conventional route of presenting to the panel.

“One of the presentations ran to almost 100 visual slides, swamping Leeds’ board with details about tactics, ethos, squad building, the rest. Clubs have come to expect nothing less.

“Daniel Farke broke from protocol by choosing not to hit the men interviewing him with heavy PowerPoint punches. I’ve won the Championship twice, he told them. I know what I’m doing. I get this division and it hasn’t changed much, so what else is there to think about? Take it or leave it.”

Can Daniel Farke take Leeds United to the Premier League this season?

After recent news surrounding Profit and Sustainability regulations at the King Power Stadium with Leicester, it seems that a lot more than just playing football hinges on claiming promotion this season.

Though Leeds are said to be safe from any FFP punishments, the club could be forced to sell some key players if they remain in the Championship this season, especially with several high-wage players set to return from loan spells at the end of the season.

Despite the worries, Leeds are very much in the mix for earning promotion from the second division, having moved to within two points of Leicester and leapfrogging Ipswich Town before their respective matches against Hull City and Cardiff City.

It would be incredibly harsh if Leeds were forced to compete in the playoffs, having not lost in the league since a 1-0 defeat to West Brom in December, but the other two sides show no signs of slowing down.
