Leeds United director of football Victor Orta reveals why it took so long to sign a winger

Leeds United director of football Victor Orta claims that it took the Whites so long to sign a winger because they didn’t just want to sign one for the sake of it.

Speaking exclusively to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Spaniard revealed the details behind Leeds’ chase for a winger that ended with them finally signing Dan James.

It seems as if Orta and Leeds were prepared to be patient, and in the end, they were rewarded when the Welsh winger became available.

He said: “The situation of the winger, we were trying to get the name, not trying to get one player for one player’s sake.

“The reason it was perhaps more delayed is because we were trying to get the name, the player we really wanted, so we didn’t need to sort it at the start of the market.”

Seems sensible.

The Whites were linked with a lot of wingers throughout the summer transfer window, but in the end, they got James.

The 23-year-old had been a target for Leeds since the 2018/19 season, so they have had to wait very patiently for him to finally become available.

However, they acted very swiftly when he was told that he was pretty much surplus to requirements by Manchester United, so the Whites deserve great credit for that [The Athletic].

It is clear from Orta’s interview that Leeds were prepared to wait for James to become available, and he did, so their plan worked, and Marcelo Bielsa now has some very strong options out wide.
