Leeds United could U-turn on Joe Gelhardt as Sunderland await loan decision

Leeds United could still opt to keep Joe Gelhardt at Elland Road as Sunderland look to sign the 20-year-old on loan, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Black Cats want to sign Gelhardt for the remainder of the campaign and are currently waiting on Leeds to make a decision on his future (Daily Mirror print edition, pg 54, 19 January).

It’s believed Sheffield United, Stoke and Wigan Athletic are all also in the hunt for Gelhardt, who has seen game time hard to come by under Jesse Marsch in the 2022/23 campaign.

Get him playing

Getting Gelhardt playing regular first team football in the Championship should be a priority for Leeds. He’s at a stage in his career where he needs to be playing 90 minutes week in and week out to really fulfil his potential. Unfortunately for the 20-year-old, there are a number of younger players at Elland Road who have stepped up in recent months.

Willy Gnonto has been Leeds’ best player of late, Crysencio Summerville has burst onto the scene this season and Sam Greenwood has seen more minutes. Even the likes of Sonny Perkins and Mateo Joseph have been more effectual than the former Wigan man.

Marsch obviously sees the attacker as part of is plans is perhaps eager to keep a close eye on his development in case an oppotunity arises at Elland Road in the weeks.

This cetainly has the feel of a transfer saga which could go down to the wire for Leeds at the January window edges closer to its conclusion.
