Leeds United could have Wilfried Gnonto bid accepted today with price not far away
Leeds United could have their bid to sign FC Zurich striker Wilfried Gnonto accepted at some point on Friday (19 August), according to Alfredo Pedulla.
The 18-year-old was only on the bench as the Swiss side came from behind to beat Hearts of Scotland in the first leg of their Europa League playoff tie on Thursday evening.
With Gnonto’s contract expiring next summer, this is likely to be the last chance Zurich have to sell him for big money and Victor Orta is close to making the Whites the team to do that.
In fact, a bid that totals £10million once add-ons are included could be accepted today which would then leave Leeds United the task of agreeing on personal terms for the Italian international.
Jesse Marsch has identified a striker as his next summer target having seen Patrick Bamford suffer yet another injury and leave him light up top once again.
It maybe shouldn’t have taken this long for Leeds to get close to bringing a new striker to Elland Road with Bamford breaking down more often than a car from the 1960s.
Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood are both promising talents who could play up front but it is a lot of pressure to rely on just them when the money is available to sign another option.
Gnonto is just as young as the aforementioned duo but he is vastly more experienced which will play a big part in seeing who Marsch selects should the Italian sign.
There is still a lot of work to do to ensure the deal happens and it may not come in time for Leeds to take on Chelsea at Elland Road on Sunday but there is no doubting that this move is long overdue.
Orta now has to go and find a new left-back to compete with Junior Firpo (if he is ever fit) and then the Whites will have had almost the perfect window all things considered.
In other Leeds United news, rather than a left-back, Orta has made a bid for this right-back who has impressed in France so far.
