Leeds can still sign Matheus Cunha despite new contract, price-tag revealed – report
It was revealed on Thursday that Hertha Berlin had extended the contract of Leeds United target Matheus Cunha this season.
Arne Friedrich confirmed that the Brazilian has put pen-to-paper on a new deal until 2025, although that may not prevent the Whites.
Leeds have been tracking the attacker for months, and have been “flirting” with the idea of bringing Cunha to Elland Road.
German outlet Kicker have today shared a major update.
It has been suggested that the new contract will not affect Leeds and their pursuit of the South American sensation in the summer.
The Whites have intensified their contact with Cunha, and are making their move to complete the switch ahead of next season.
Hertha Berlin spent £15.5million on the “Genius” in 2020, and it would take double that, so more than £30million to complete another switch.
Priority?
With Leeds intensifying their contact with Cunha, it appears as though they have made this transfer one of their main priorities.
Patrick Bamford has been electrifying this season, and Rodrigo’s ability to play there means Marcelo Bielsa is looking for a playmaker.
Cunha has been superb in Germany and could be looking for another challenge in the Premier League, as he recently liked a Tweet regarding the Whites’ interest.
The 21-year-old has scored eight goals and added four assists in his 28 appearances this season, and was nominated for the Puskas Award last year.
Paying over £30million for one attacker may seem overkill given our need for a left-back and maybe even a couple of midfielders.
Finishing in the top half of the Premier League has certainly helped our cause, as there is a clear path for European qualification next season, Cunha could be the catalyst.
