Leeds United: Call for Elland Road sacking after ‘scandalous’ Jean-Kevin Augustin developments

Leeds United need to sack whoever was responsible for the Jean-Kévin Augustin transfer, according to the Sunday People’s Neil Moxley.

The Athletic reported (10 April) that Leeds must now pay £24.5million to the 25-year-old forward who featured just three times at Elland Road, after already paying RB Leipzig £15.5million in a settlement over the controversial deal.

Writing in his latest Sunday People column (16 April), Moxley has slammed the decision-making at the Yorkshire side and has called for whoever gave the go-ahead to be sacked.

“Which bright spark was it that gave the go-ahead for Jean-Kevin Augustin to join Leeds United from RB Leipzig?

“That deal has cost the club over £40million. For a bloke who played just over one half of football.

“I don’t want people to lose their jobs but someone deserves to lose theirs for that alone. Scandalous,” wrote Moxley (Sunday People, pg 47, 16 April).

Laughable

The Augustin saga has made Leeds one of the biggest laughing stocks in the Premier League at present. Who on earth thought it would be a good idea to commit to such a payment?

It will go down as one of the worst transfers in football history, and if Leeds are relegated, it could have a huge impact moving forward.

If they are a Premier League club, the financial clout would keep the Yorkshire side in a relatively strong financial position. £24.5million is a drop in the ocean for most top flight sides.

However, that sum would be a significant amount for a second-tier club and could cripple Leeds if they are relegated.

For the time being, no payment will be made to the 25-year-old forward, who currently plays his football with FC Basel. An appeal has been lodged and we will all once again have to wait to find out whether the full amount will be paid.

Potentially reaching an amicable resolution with their former player could be the route to go down. It will ensure a guaranteed payment for the Frenchman, which he could be willing to accept.
