Leeds United boost for EFL Cup clash as Wolves expected to be without eight key players
Leeds United travel to Molineux on Wednesday evening and Wolves will have to fend off the Whites without the help of eight players.
A spot in the fourth round of the EFL Cup awaits the winner of Wednesday’s clash, and Leeds United should feel confident after taking a glance at Wolves’ injury list.
As reported by Birmingham Mail, Wolves are currently without eight players, including a key attacking trio.
Matheus Nunes, Toti Gomes, Pedro Neto, Chiquinho, Raul Jiminez and Sasa Kalajdzic are all out injured, with only Nunes and Gomes standing a chance of featuring in Wednesday’s match.
On top of their injury crisis, Wolves are also without the suspended Nelson Semedo and Diego Costa after the duo both received red cards in recent weeks.
Going away from home for a midweek cup clash is never an easy task, but there’s a good argument for Leeds being favourites on Wednesday night.
Based purely on league form, Leeds will be reeling from their back-to-back wins over Liverpool and Bournemouth, while Wolves sit 19th and will be hugely lacking confidence after their heartbreak during the 3-2 loss against Brighton on Saturday.
Both teams will likely rotate and rest some key players, but Leeds’ depth looks far better than Wolves’ due to their growing injury list.
A cup run could be great for Leeds this season and Jesse Marsch may instead decide to go all-out and name a strong lineup, but even if he doesn’t there are plenty of fringe players that will be eager to impress.
Mateusz Klich, Diego Llorente and Junior Firpo are three first-team players that will be desperate to regain their spot in Marsch’s lineup, and Wednesday night will be a great chance for them to shine.
A third consecutive win in all competitions would well and truly bury the pressure piling on Marsch’s shoulders, and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be confident of picking up another win on Wednesday.
