Leeds United board must accelerate contract talks with Pascal Struijk
Pascal Struijk has been a standout performer for Leeds United in the 2022/23 campaign and it’s now time for the club to extend his deal at Elland Road.
The 23-year-old has featured 13 times in the Premier League this season and has impressed whilst operating slightly out of position in the left-back role.
However, with the defender’s current contract now entering its final 18 months there is a good chance Struijk would’ve been attracting attention from elsewhere.
It was reported by The Athletic’s Phil Hay (The Phil Hay Show,16 September, 30mins) that the club plan to start contract negotiations with Struijk. However, no concrete news of talks has emerged as of yet. Considering his impressive season and importance to Leeds, it would be a travesty for the club to lose the defender for below his value.
The nearer his contract creeps towards its end, Struijk’s value will only diminish further. Getting him tied down to a new deal would be an excellent statement of intent from the board, and a sign that Leeds won’t have their best assets pinched.
It promises to be an intriguing couple of months at Elland Road with the January window fast approaching. Leeds have already been linked with a number of players, with an attacker and a left-back high on the list of Jesse Marsch’s priorities.
The club must ensure they add to their ranks in January but also keep a close eye on some of the players currently on their books who need new deals.
