Leeds United: Ally McCoist makes ‘wide open’ promotion claim live on talkSPORT

Ally McCoist has insisted the race for promotion from the Championship is now “wide open” after Leeds United, Southampton, Leicester and Ipswich’s results at the weekend.

With Daniel Farke’s side dropping points against Huddersfield and Leicester losing to Queens Park Rangers while both Ipswich and Southampton won, it has remained tight at the top.

McCoist shared his initial view that Ipswich would start to fall away before their recent run of form, while he was full of praise for Southampton and admitted Leicester have been dragged back into the scrap.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [4 March, 06:55], McCoist shared: “I’ll be honest, I thought Ipswich had hit the buffers a little bit, but boy have they recovered.

“I saw Southampton up at Liverpool, they knocked the ball about, they were a great watch. Then you look at Leeds, obviously a draw at the weekend, one each at Huddersfield.

“It’s very difficult now. It looked that Leicester were home and away but it’s wide open now.”

Will Leeds United win promotion from the Championship?

With the race for the automatic promotion places, and perhaps now even the title, hotting up as we approach the final stages of the season, it is still up for grabs for any of the top four teams to mount a late charge.

The pace they have set at the top has been historic, but with only two places to be split among the four teams, at least two of Leicester, Ipswich, Leeds and Southampton will be forced to battle in the playoffs.

Former Leeds boss Paul Heckingbottom recently backed his former club to go all the way with Leicester in their bid for promotion but also admitted Ipswich would be among the contenders given their perceived overachievement.

Leeds went into the season as one of the favourites alongside Southampton and Leicester, but if any of those teams drop into the playoffs, there is no guarantee they make it back to the Premier League this season.
