Leeds United agree relegation clause for Max Wober transfer in January

Leeds United have inserted a relegation clause into January transfer signing Max Wober’s contract, as he looks set to complete his move to Elland Road, according to Peter Linden.

The Austrian is “on course” to reach a full agreement with the Whites [Phil Hay] and provide some much-needed competition to their defensive ranks in the second half of the season.

Since arriving at the West Yorkshire club in March 2022, American manager Jesse Marsch has overhauled his squad, signing ten players and investing over £85million in new players.

And according to journalist Linden, Leeds have added a relegation clause to his new contract in case the club’s worst fears are met.

He wrote: “Wöber will be the eleventh new acquisition at Leeds under ex-Salzburg coach Jesse Marsch, who has so far invested more than 100 million euros in rebuilding the team.

“Wöber is likely to cost as much as ex-Salzburg defender Rasmus Kristensen last summer, but the 24-year-old from Vienna will add another million [£886,000] extra if Leeds manage to stay up with him.”

Early business

Leeds have been in dire need of defensive reinforcements for quite some time, and getting this piece of business over the line nice and early will be a welcome relief to fans.

A new left-back is desperately needed in the upcoming window, and although he isn’t a natural full-back, Wober has played there for Salzburg in the past – so he can at least provide some competition for Pascal Struijk.

Liam Cooper’s struggles have been well-documented this season, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Wober drafted in as soon as the deal is completed.

With Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa, Brentford and Nottingham Forest all awaiting in the next month, the Austrian will need to hit the ground running and help Leeds string together a run of results.

Hopefully, this is the first of many January transfers for Leeds and the start of a surge back up the Premier League table.

In other Leeds United news, the club is thrashing out terms for an early January signing after this player jetted into the UK for a move.
