Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips has 'difficult' job - Michail Antonio
Many players face difficulties adjusting to different managers’ styles in different teams amid the international break but none more so than Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips.
That is according to Michail Antonio, who claimed the midfielder has to change a lot to change tactically when playing for his club and country.
Despite new manager Jesse Marsch opting for slightly different tactics, the West Ham striker touched on the Whites’ man to man marking and how that has an impact when Phillips represents the Three Lions.
He said on the Footballer’s Football Podcast: “It’s more the midfielders who I think should find it difficult. It’s different routines.
“Look at Kalvin Phillips, when he’s at Leeds he’s basically man-for-man, but then going from that training to England where you need to find shape and stuff like that and not you can’t through the middle, because they will find the strikers,
“But at Leeds, nobody worries about that.”
One of a kind
Phillips isn’t just a gifted footballer; he is incredibly intelligent. There is a reason why he was so integral to Marcelo Bielsa’s system, he has a brilliant football brain that many people on the outside don’t see.
He can read games very well and sniff out danger effortlessly and his absence from the Whites team has been the biggest blowout of the lot this season.
There are no midfielders in the Leeds squad that can emulate when Phillips can do with the very capable players who have filled in for him this season looking lost making that glaringly obvious.
Whilst Antonio’s comments make perfect sense, the 26-year-old has already proven himself to be up to the task of adapting. He played a key role in England’s journey to the 2020 European Championship final under Gareth Southgate whilst playing in a completely different system.
That is a testament to his quality and both psychically and mentally.
