Karen Carney delivers verdict on penalty incident in Leeds 1-0 Crystal Palace
Raphinha scored from the spot in the extra time as Leeds United sealed a 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace at Elland Road on Tuesday night.
In the final few minutes of the game, from a corner, the ball struck Marc Guehi’s arm and Kevin Friend, after checking the pitchside monitor, gave the penalty in Leeds’ favour.
Raphinha stepped up, soaked the pressure, and coolly slotted home to seal all three points for the home side.
After the match, Carney gave her views on the penalty incident on the Premier League Tv production. She said when asked if it was a penalty: “Yeah. Definitely penalty.
“Crystal Palace have been vulnerable on set pieces all season. They’ve conceded from corners, you knew you might get something from them at this point.
“Arm raised. Definite penalty.”
Huge win for Leeds
Raphinha once again has been the best player on the pitch, and the composure he showed in netting the penalty is incredible.
Guehi probably would feel that he was a bit unlucky here but such is the fine margin.
Palace have been vulnerable from set-pieces this season, and Carney is absolutely spot on here.
It was Raphinha’s sixth goal of the season, and it lifts the Whites to 15th in the Premier League.
After an entertaining yet cagey first 45 minutes, the game opened up a bit in the second half.
Leeds created loads of chances but once again there was no end product.
They needed a stroke of luck, and they got it in the end. More than anything else, it feels like a massive relief.
Leeds enjoyed 62% of possession and attempted as many as 16 shots. They rode their luck as well, with Christian Benteke missing a sitter.
In other Leeds United news, Gary Neville blasted this Elland Road chief after he was left fuming with an official tweet by the club.
