Leeds chief hits out at official advice that ‘Breaches’ club principle after report emerges
Leeds United managing director Angus Kinnear has slammed the advice of the police for high-risk matches to be played at neutral venues.
Leeds have always pushed for the season to resume so they can win promotion back to the Premier League by doing their talking on the pitch.
However they will only continue to push to play their last nine matches if they are to go ahead on a level playing field.
It has been suggested that “high-risk” Leeds and West Brom games could be moved to neutral stadiums in order to prevent fans from congregating outside and breaking social distancing measures.
The Telegraph has recently reported that the Leeds and Derby match, which is set to take place at Pride Park, might be moved to Southampton, with both clubs “stunned” by the police’s proposal.
Kinnear has said that Leeds would be dead against any such idea, maintaining the club’s view that the final games should be made as fair as possible to everyone.
“Our position has been that we will play our remaining games under any conditions as long as they maintain the principle of a level playing field,” Kinnear wrote on the Yorkshire Evening Post website.
“The suggestion that a handful of selected fixtures, on police advice, are played at neutral venues, clearly breaches this principle particularly for decisive matches.
“Fortunately, West Yorkshire Police are in support of our home games being played at Elland Road as they know that this is the optimal way to manage the risk of supporters congregating and creating either a health risk or the threat of disturbance.”
It would be ridiculous if they move the Leeds and Derby game to Southampton.
If fans are going to congregate outside stadiums they will do it anywhere in the country because that’s what football fans do. They follow their team everywhere.
Hopefully no one does this because it might lead to Leeds getting into trouble or more games being played at neutral venus so fans need to do the right thing and watch on at home.
In other Leeds United news, this player is likely to exit Spurs after being linked with Leeds.
