Lee Sobot thrilled as Stuart McKinstry earns Scotland recognition

After impressive displays for Leeds United under-23s, youngster Stuart McKinstry has received his first call-up to the Scotland U21’S squad.

The 19-year-old has been capped in both the U17’s and U19’s international teams. However, this debut call-up provides the young winger with an opportunity to perform on a bigger stage.

After recently making his first-team debut for United at Craven Cottage, scoring the decisive penalty in a victory over Fulham, McKinstry caught the eye of Scotland’s U21’s boss Scott Gemmill.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Lee Sobot has related the news on his personal Twitter account and is clearly thrilled.

“Another hugely promising Whites youngster,” he wrote. “Congratulations Stuart.”

Promise.

With Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa putting his faith in the young Scotsman to take a penalty in the Carabao Cup, fans can be sure of the promise he has.

The young winger recently a new two-year deal with the Whites after coming through Motherwell’s academy and the Scotsman will be hoping to represent his country in the upcoming UEFA U21’s Euro qualifiers, facing Kazakhstan and Belgium.

Leeds’ bench was littered with young talent for the 2-0 defeat in the capital on Tuesday. Arsenal’s quality shone through, but the positives were there to be seen for fans as youngsters such as Crysencio Summerville, Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt, Leo Fuhr Hjelde and McKinstry all featured on the bench for Bielsa’s side.

Cody Drameh went one better and got his first senior start for Leeds, the 19-year-old impressed despite the defeat.

For academy stars such as McKinstry, seeing Drameh get his first senior start will be encouraging as the pathway into the first team is there for all to see and with results not going United’s way, a doorway may open sooner than expected.
