Patrick Bamford continues to prove his doubters wrong on his Premier League return with Leeds United and the stats show he’s actually getting better.
Doubts were raised over Bamford’s ability to score goals in the top flight before the season started as some thought that Leeds may struggle in front of goal.
How wrong those people turned out to be.
Bamford is the Premier League’s fourth top scorer with 14 goals to his name this season and it turns out that he may be getting even more goals in the future.
Sky Sports have taken a look at the players who are still in the race for the golden boot and while it is looking like the winner will either be Mo Salah or Harry Kane, they noticed something interesting about Bamford.
Bamford’s expected goals rate (xG) suggests that he has become more clinical as the season has progressed.
It stands to reason that a player will improve the more they play but is it the clinical improvement of Bamford that is important for Leeds.
We will always create chances with Marcelo Bielsa at the helm but there have been some games this season where there has been an alarming lack of chances.
Against Fulham a few weeks ago, Bamford only had an xG of 0.27 but still scored.
In comparison, in the 4-1 defeat to Leicester City towards the start of the season, Bamford had an xG of 1.82 despite not finding the back of the net.
Scoring in a side that creates plenty of chances for you is great but high-quality strikers can win you games when they only have a sniff of goal.
Bamford has been outstanding this season and is only improving and this bodes very well for Leeds as it means we can focus on other areas of the pitch during the summer transfer window.
We’re all hoping that Joe Gelhardt can make that step up to the first team to become Bamford’s understudy and if he can then our strike force could be set in stone for the next few years.
Bamford is easily a Premier League quality striker and depending on how the rest of the season goes he could end up being a fully fledged international as well.
It is very encouraging to see Bamford continue to improve and it makes us wonder what level he can rise to as a forward.
Could he be challenging with Kane and Salah for the golden boot next season?
