Kalvin Phillips comments on Leeds striker Patrick Bamford

Kalvin Phillips has said on Football Focus that Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford is not among the best of trainers at Thorp Arch.

Bamford deservedly earned his first England cap earlier this month and Phillips has revealed that the Leeds striker was very nervous before his first training with Gareth Southgate’s squad.

The 28-year-old striker made his debut against Andorra but he was subbed off in the second half.

Phillips, who was simply outstanding for England during the European Championships, shared what Bamford was like on international duty.

The Leeds midfielder said that he was hoping that Bamford trains well, and added that his club team-mate was simply “unbelievable” once he got going.

“He’s quite nervous before he went there,” Phillips said to Football Focus.

“I think the first day we were training, he got up extra early to have a little coffee and chill out by himself.

“Then he came to my room to wake me up, so at Leeds, he’s not the best trainer in the team, so I was nervous thinking ‘I hope he trains well’.

“Honestly, when he got there, he was unbelievable.”

Will Bamford get another chance?

While Phillips is almost certain to get into Gareth Southgate’s senior side for the October World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary, Bamford’s inclusion remains up in the air.

Bamford sustained an ankle injury against Newcastle United, and missed Leeds 2-1 defeat to West Ham over the weekend.

It’s been a frustrating start to the season for Bamford. The former Chelsea striker has managed only one goal in the Premier League so far which he scored against Burnley before the international break.

Southgate will announce his squad on Thursday at 2 pm, and it will be interesting to see if Bamford gets another chance to represent the England national team.
