Junior Firpo makes new Leeds United contract admission as Elland Road exit looms

Junior Firpo has admitted he doesn’t know what his future at Leeds United will hold as he enters the final months of his contract.

The Dominican Republic international’s current deal at Elland Road expires at the end of the season and Daniel Farke has suggested that talks are yet to begin over extending his stay with the Championship side.

While there is still plenty of time for the defender and the Whites to reach a new agreement and the left-back is happy at Leeds, he insists that he doesn’t know if he will exit Elland Road at the end of the campaign.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post (6 November) he said: “Football is like that. One day you are here, another day you are there.

“But that is the topic I’ve been discussing with myself since we got relegated. Obviously, I could have done the same [as others who left], I could have gone away. I have my options, I think everyone knows, it’s not a thing that I can hide.

“I had my options and I could go away, but as you say, my family is settled here. We are doing really good at the moment, but we don’t know what the future will say for me.”

Will Junior Firpo exit Elland Road amid Leeds United transfer speculation?

Firpo may not have always been the most popular player at Elland Road, but over the last year or so, the left-back has really established himself as one of the most important members of Farke’s first-team squad.

The Dominican Republic international has started to have a real impact at both ends of the field and while Sam Byram has impressed in his absence, the Whites lack a cutting edge when Firpo isn’t in the starting XI.

However, the former Barcelona man won’t want to be playing Championship football for any longer than he has to. It seems likely that he would be keen to move away from Elland Road if the Whites were to miss out on promotion once again.

Ultimately, making a final decision on Firpo’s future will become much easier for Farke and those around him at Elland Road once Leeds know what division they will be playing their football in next term.

Hopefully, a swift contract agreement can be reached if and when the Whites book their place back in the Premier League.
