Joe Masi discusses Pereira absence v Leeds ahead of transfer window

Express & Star’s reliable West Brom reporter Joseph Masi has claimed that Matheus Pereira wanted to play the Leeds United game to get himself in the shop window.

Masi believes that the player’s performances have improved of late because he’s angling for a move from The Hawthorns in the summer.

The Leeds game on the final day of the season would have been his last chance to put on a show for his prospective buyers, one of whom are Leeds United.

Speaking about him on the Baggies Broadcast, Masi said, “I heard early on that Pereira was injured. I heard all week that he was doing absolutely everything he could to try and be fit for the game. He really wanted to play.

“I personally think one of the reasons Matheus Pereira has played so well over the last couple of weeks is because he’s putting himself in the shop window because he wants to stay in the Premier League because he wants a big-money move.

“Therefore, I think there’s a part of him [that] would’ve really wanted to play against Leeds – another opportunity to show what he can do.”

Will get a move

Despite not playing in the final game of the season, Pereira is likely to get himself a move this summer.

He’s been one of the few good things at West Brom this campaign – having 11 goals and six assists to show for his exploits.

The 25-year-old has single-handedly won games for the Baggies, and whoever signs him this transfer window or whenever he moves, will have an exceptional player among their ranks.

His versatility is what could tempt Marcelo Bielsa to ask the club to go all out to acquire his services. He’s capable of playing as a number 10 just as well as he is as a right-winger.

Pereira delivers goals and creates chances no matter where he plays and his work rate is also equally noteworthy. He’s undoubtedly outgrown the West Brom challenge and is far too good for the Championship.

If we were Victor Orta, we would get our checkbooks out right away to sign the Brazilian.
