Joe Donnohue: Leeds United wait to July to bolster Under-23 ranks with first team additions priority

Leeds United are “likely” to wait until July to add to their under-23 ranks with first-team additions a priority according to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Joe Donnohue.

The Athletic reported on 2 June, that Leeds were interested in Birmingham youngster George Hall, as well as West Ham’s 18-year-old striker Sonny Perkins.

However, due to Jesse Marsch and Victor Orta focussing on first team additions early on in the window, Donnohue has suggested that next month could see some youth additions come through the Elland Road front door.

He wrote in the Yorkshire Evening Post on Wednesday 22 June: “Last summer, Leeds announced their first addition of the window with the arrival of Amari Miller for the Under-23 side on June 28, 2021.

“If Leeds are to bolster the Under-23 group this summer, it is most likely to occur in July as efforts are made to supplement the first-team take priority.

“Nevertheless, the speed at which Leeds recruit for the development squad this summer will be reflective of how high prices have risen for England’s best teenagers.”

Hold off

At present Leeds have an impressive group of young players that feature for their under-23 side as well as the first team on occasions.

Many of these players haven’t even come through the ranks at Elland Road and have instead been poached from other clubs for relatively cheap.

Joe Gelhardt, Lewis Bate, Sam Greenwood and Cody Drameh were all signed from elsewhere.

It will not be a shock to see Leeds United continue their good work regarding youth talents this summer.

However, it is important to recognise the speed at which Jesse Marsch and Victor Orta are adding quality first-team additions to the squad.

Leeds are facing a busy few weeks with Raphinha potentially leaving the club in the near future and the decision makers at Elland Road looking to make adequate plans for if and when he does depart.

Despite their success in recruiting young talent in recent years, Leeds should stay focussed on continuing the good work they’ve undertaken to improve the first-team squad for the time being.
