Jeff Stelling explodes live on Sky Sports at Leeds United v Wolverhampton Wanderers incident
Jeff Stelling was furious with referee Michael Salisbury after he sent Wolves defender Jonny off during the Premier League fixture against Leeds United.
The 29-year-old was initially shown a yellow card for a challenge on Luke Ayling before the official was asked to head to the VAR monitor to overturn his decision.
Stelling was left bemused due to the length of time it took Salisbury to conclude that it was a sending-off, despite the Spaniard clearly leading with his studs.
“Surely this is going to be a red card,” said Stelling (Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, 16;42, 18 March)
“Why is he taking so long? He’s looked at it six, seven, eight times. Michael Salsbury, show red, he still looks dubious, he’s back on the pitch and it is going to be a red card.”

That is what VAR has been brought in for. It’s a surprise the official didn’t spot the incident immediately. Jonny was rash and deserved to be sent on his way.
It wasn’t a relaxing end to the game, but that’s an absolutely vital three points for Javi Gracia’s men. The performance in the second half was much improved and Leed have now propelled themselves up to 14th in the table, just one place behind Julen Lopetegui’s men.
Bournemouth’s defeat to Aston Villa also aided the Whites’ cause on Saturday evening. There promise to be lots of ups and downs before the end of the 2022/23 campaign and evenings like this must be cherished. It was a must-win game at Molineux ahead of the trip to Arsenal and Gracia’s side got the job done.
Performances are a secondary concern at present, with points on the board and short-term planning at the forefront of the head coach’s concerns.
