Jamie Shackleton Leeds United permanent exit on the cards as agent shares update on Elland Road future

Jamie Shackleton’s agent has suggested he will probably look secure the 23-year-old a permanent Leeds United exit this summer.

The midfielder has been a bit-part player for Millwall during the 2022/23 campaign and is set to return to Elland Road at the end of the season.

He is contracted to the Yorkshire side until 2024 and his agent, Hayden Evans, has suggested he could look for a permanent departure.

“Definitely not enough minutes for him this season,” said Evans (Phil Hay Show, 19m 43s, 14 April).

“He’s another one who has a year left at Leeds. It’s probably more that we need to work something out to get a permanent [future away from Leeds].

“He needs to be starting games and he’s good enough.”

Shame

It would be a huge shame if Shackleton did depart Leeds before fulfilling his full potential, but, sadly, he’s at an age where he needs to be playing regularly. He’s not a young player anymore and needs to be given the chance to play regular minutes, whether that be in the Championship or League One.

His situation is slightly different to Charlie Cresswell, with the defender still in his early 20s there’s still an opportunity for him to make an impact at Elland Road. Victor Orta and the board must work out a way of ensuring these younger players are given the correct opportunities.

Leeds have recruited heavily in the 18 to 21 age group and have potentially forgotten about some of the talent that has come through the ranks in West Yorkshire.

With there being uncertainty over the managerial situation and the club’s league position, there are still plenty of loose ends to be tied up heading into the off-season.
