Jamie Redknapp wanted to see Joe Gelhardt start for Leeds v Norwich
Jamie Redknapp has insisted that he wants to see Joe Gelhardt starting for Leeds United in the Premier League.
Despite shining in the 1-1 draw with Wolves and coming off the bench at Arsenal, Marcelo Bielsa left his attacking sensation off the pitch at Norwich.
The Whites still managed to grab all three points at Carrow Road, with Raphinha and Rodrigo smashing home the goals.
Speaking on Sky Sports this week, Redknapp was clearly left thrilled with what he has seen from Gelhardt in recent weeks.
“There’s parts of him like Rooney,” he said. “Where he gets into the box and makes things happen.
“A bit of a firestarter and that’s what he is. That’s some cameo last week. I was hoping he would start (against Norwich). He’s certainly got a good career ahead of him.”
Biding his time.
Bielsa is managing Gelhardt perfectly, and clearly doesn’t want to overwhelm him with Premier League football.
There is no bigger pressure cooker than the English top-flight, and the young striker seems to thrive when there is nothing to lose.
In the draw against Wolves, Gelhardt came on when the Whites didn’t really have any other option and he thrived in getting on the ball and making things happen.
Compare that to the Norwich game, we were already 2-1 up and preserving that lead, rather than pushing relentlessly for a goal which may suit Gelhardt.
Redknapp and others disappointed not to see him will get plenty more opportunities to see Gelhardt in the Premier League this season.
What a future this sensation has ahead of him, and we can’t wait to be there for every single step of the journey.
