‘I’ve come into my own’ – Leeds star claims one Bielsa decision was a ‘real honour’
Leeds United defender Liam Cooper has claimed that keeping the captain’s armband under Marcelo Bielsa was a real honour.
The Scottish international admitted that he has come into his own in the heart of defence at Elland Road since the South American took charge in West Yorkshire.
Cooper was the captain for a number of years and retained that honour once Bielsa arrived at the beginning of last season.
Cooper responded to a question asking if he believes he is an inspirational leader at the club, sharing he certainly hopes so.
“I hope people believe that,” he told LUTV.
“The big one for me is just trying to set an example and really embrace the role, I certainly think I’ve come into my own in the past couple of years.
“Obviously, Marcelo to give me the captaincy and give me the armband, it was, like Lucas [Radebe] has said, a real honour and one I really wanted to take with pride.”
Cooper may thank Bielsa for the honour, but it was well publicised at the time that the head coach allowed his squad to vote for who they want in charge.
The defender is clearly well-liked within the squad and has reiterated that he is there for every teammate on multiple occasions.
The 28-year-old is one of the consistent performers within the squad too, not only does he lead by example but he hardly puts a foot wrong – vital in this promotion charge.
