Injury Expert: Illan Meslier struck by glandular fever as Leeds United v Manchester City timeline set

Jesse Marsch has confirmed that Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has been sidelined with glandular fever and will likely be out for the next ten days, as reported by Ben Dinnery.

The Whites’ shot-stopper has been in fantastic form this season, pulling off heroic man-of-the-match displays in crucial wins over the likes of Liverpool.

The young Frenchman was left out of Didier Deschamps France World Cup squad and had been training with his club side in preparation for their encounter with league-leaders Manchester City (December 28).

However, as reported by injury expert Dinnery, the 22-year-old has been struck down with illness and will likely miss his side’s friendly against Real Sociedad next week.

Dinnery tweeted: “Marsch confirms Meslier will be sidelined for around the next 10 days ‘You guys call it glandular fever, we call it mono. We’re trying to be safe with him, but also measure him appropriately. It’ll be close when we can get him back into training. Days to a week before City’.”

Worrying

This fresh piece of injury news will leave Leeds fans in a heightened state of anxiety, and rightly so, due to Meslier’s importance to this side.

After a mediocre start to life in the Premier League, the Frenchman has grown from strength to strength and is now an essential part of Marsch’s reign at Elland Road.

Neither Joel Robles nor Kristoffer Klaesson inspires complete confidence like the 22-year-old does, so it will be imperative that Meslier is only out for ten days and can return for The Whites before their Premier League return.

He will undeniably be busy during the clash against Pep Guardiola’s side after Christmas, so he needs to be fully fit and firing to aid Leeds in what will be an extremely tough match.

Hopefully, a week of training will be enough to restore Meslier to the starting XI as he is both a crucial figure in between the sticks and a core leadership figure within Leeds’ back-four.

In other Leeds United news, Jesse Marsch is in an ‘anxious’ wait after Crysencio Summerville limped off during their friendly against Elche.
