‘Incredible story’ – Micah Richards admits huge surprise with win for Leeds United v Brentford

Former Manchester City right-back Micah Richards has admitted that he was wrong to doubt that Leeds United will not be able to avoid the drop.

The Whites secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Brentford in their last fixture on Sunday, meaning that they will be playing in England’s top-flight competition for a third straight campaign.

Speaking about the victory, the former Aston Villa player termed Leeds story as an ‘incredible’ one.

Leeds United

“I’ve got to be impartial and I feel sorry for Burnley but, being from Leeds, you want Leeds to do well. It’s an incredible story,” he told Sky Sports as quoted by Leeds Live.

“They are a good side but I didn’t see it. Jesse Marsch has done a brilliant job coming in, not really having much to work with, big injuries and to keep them up was massive.”

Leeds roar back

Fearing relegation, Leeds United made an incredible comeback to secure an injury-time victory courtesy of Raphinha and Jack Harrison’s goals.

The duo were instrumental for the club thought out the campaign. The Brazilian right-winger scored 11 goals for the Whites while Harrison netted eight times in the campaign, including a memorable injury-time winner against Brentford.

There was a real concern amongst the Leeds fanbase with relegation looming large as the club only secured promotion back to the Premier League in the 2020-21 season.

Therefore, the all-important win on Sunday will live long in the memory of Leeds fans who will be hoping for better things next season.

The credit for Leeds’ survival must be given to new manager Jesse Marsch who replaced fan-favourite Marcelo Bielsa earlier this year.

Under his management, the Whites played 12 games, winning four and suffering defeats in five whereas three games ended in a stalemate.
