Marcelo Bielsa confirmed that he would be staying with Leeds United for at least another season on Thursday.

He confirmed the news that Leeds fans have been waiting for all summer in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Liverpool on Saturday.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay put some meat on the bones of the new deal.

The Sun had talked of the new deal being worth £8m but Hay states that it is “in excess of £6m”, which is the salary that he was on last season.

That amount covers the salaries of his coaching staff and assistants.

Hay claims the deal was agreed much earlier but that translation issues and Bielsa’s busy schedule meant it dragged on.

He also claims that Bielsa would have been on the touchline at Anfield regardless of this new deal – his rolling contract signed last summer allowed for that.

The deal will be for another 12 months and he only demanded minor changes to Thorp Arch and his backroom staff.

Was it ever really in doubt?

As it turns out, it wasn’t but the saga has still been responsible for bitten fingernails and grey hairs among fans.

It’s hard to imagine any other manager taking this long to sign a deal – and to our knowledge, it hasn’t actually been signed yet, just confirmed – but Bielsa is unique.

Andrea Radrizzani implored him to relax at the end of the season but perhaps that was said knowing what Bielsa would be like going into the Premier League.

He admitted that he hasn’t had time to take a holiday since promotion was won and that he’s been working flat out on getting his Leeds side ready.

We didn’t think we could love Bielsa any more than we did but this whole contract saga has managed it.
