Illan Meslier's performances for Leeds United will be catching the eye of 'Europe's top table' - journalist

After a superb start to the season, LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross believes Leeds United shot-stopper Illan Meslier will be a target for many top European clubs.

Meslier has been a standout performer for the Whites this season, putting in a number of dazzling displays to help Leeds climb to 11th in the Premier League.

The 22-year-old narrowly missed out on making the France squad for this week’s Nations League fixtures, but he still remains one of the brightest young goalkeepers in Europe.

So much so, that journalist Beren Cross believes Meslier is beginning to draw the attention of Europe’s elite this season.

While writing player ratings for Leeds Live, Cross followed up his 8/10 for Meslier by saying: “The French goalkeeper continues to suggest this might well be the breakthrough campaign which catches eyes around Europe’s top table.

“A series of brilliant saves impressed against Chelsea, Brighton and Everton.”

A top prospect

If Meslier wasn’t already on the radar at top European clubs, he will be this season.

He enjoyed a stellar season between the sticks in 2021/22, making a league-topping 143 saves as Leeds narrowly avoided relegation.

Even when stood behind a fragile and vulnerable back four, Meslier has shown time and time again that he’s one of Europe’s best shot stoppers.

Having now started this season in a similar vein of form, it’s the Frenchman’s consistency that will likely be catching the eye of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Leeds fans shouldn’t worry too much about losing their beloved keeper – after all, he did sign a five-year contract with the Yorkshire side just last season.

Clubs will inevitably come sniffing around for his signature over the next few winters, but the decision to sell lies with Leeds, and Meslier is held in the highest regard at Elland Road. He isn’t going anywhere.
