Illan Meslier tipped for glory by Matt Pyzdrowski

Leeds United ace Illan Meslier has been tipped for greatness with France if he keeps working on his game and eradicates the mistakes.

In a recent piece with Phil Hay for The Athletic, their goalkeeping expert Matt Pyzdrowski analysed Meslier’s strengths and weaknesses.

He highlighted that while Meslier is imperative to Leeds playing out from the back, he does tend to play the erratic pass that puts his side under pressure on occasion.

However, he was quick to say that these mistakes are few and far between and then waxed lyrical about his diving technique and reach.

He also claims that the 21-year-old appears to have a high ceiling and hinted that he’ll keep getting better with time.

Discussing the safe against Sheffield United in the 1-0 Leeds win last season, he wrote” “Meslier’s footwork and reflexes were incredible but even more crucial was his decision to shift his eyes away from the ball and onto Lundstram’s anticipated point of impact.”

He then concluded the piece with the following, “Meslier is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the Premier League’s biggest rising stars. If he continues to enhance his game and eliminate some weaknesses, there is no limit to his ceiling or his potential.

“It’s not unrealistic to say that we might be looking at one of the next great goalkeepers, not only in club football but for France’s national team too.”

Some talent

Meslier’s first season in the Premier League certainly didn’t seem like it as he was exceptional from start to end.

Kiko Casilla had let this team down on several occasions and there were doubts whether a player unproven in the Premier League and extremely inexperienced could take over from a former Real Madrid goalkeeper.

However, the Frenchman did that with no questions asked and has since taken his game to the next level.

Yes, there are glaring mistakes in his game that must be eradicated but the same case can be made for most, if not all players at his age.

Leeds clearly have a talent in there and it’s down to Marcelo Bielsa to create an environment that can help him thrive.

Thus far, the Argentine’s done just that and is being rewarded by the Frenchman.
