Ian Wright fears breakdown injury for Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips

Ian Wright is sweating over the fitness of Kalvin Phillips as he’s eyeing his first Leeds United start in several months.

The former Arsenal striker believes that Patrick Bamford was rushed into action too early and that led to him suffering an injury breakdown.

He hopes that it is not the case with the English midfielder who last started a game for the Whites in 2021.

Speaking on the Wrighty’s House podcast, he said, “To lose for someone that long with a hamstring it was tough. When you’ve got an injury like that, every single minute of the day you’re thinking about it. You’re desperate to get back.

“So I just pray to God that it’s [Phillips’ injury] not a breakdown like Bamford.

“I hope that it doesn’t happen with Kalvin because he’s needed and I just want him to get back really really strong.”

Hope he’s fine

Players do tend to rush themselves back from injury when their team desperately requires their services.

It’s no secret that Leeds have desperately missed his presence in midfield for the last few months.

Not signing another midfielder came as a huge surprise and one that the board have no excuses for not getting one over the line.

Hopefully, Phillips is back to full fitness and isn’t pushing himself to guide the Whites over the line.

He knows that this is a World Cup year and his chances of going to Qatar hinge on how many matches he plays from now until November.

If he’s fit and playing regularly, Gareth Southgate surely has to name him in his squad.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are leading the race to complete a major signing and have already opened talks to seal a £25m deal.
