Harry Redknapp claims Leeds the best side he's ever come up against
Harry Redknapp has said that Don Revie’s Leeds United side is the best team that he’s ever come up against.
Redknapp was talking on radio station Dubai Eye 103.8 on Wednesday evening when the topic of ‘best ever’ came up.
Redknapp said that he had to go back to before the Premier League era before talking breathlessly about the legendary Revie side.
“I would go back to before the Premier League,” Redknapp said.
“I would go back to Leeds United, that Don Revie team. When you look back at a team with balance it was incredible really.”
“Reaney and Cooper, Reaney was probably the only player that George Best never got a kick against, he was hard as nails, quick as lightning.
“Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter, Johnny Giles, Billy Bremner in midfield… who could play like you wouldn’t believe, but they were also really, really nasty. They could sort you out, if you were 6ft4 they’d cut you down to size.
“You had Peter Lorimer who could score goals from 35 yards, he had dynamite in his boots Eddie Gray who was a genius of a footballer. Then you had Allan Clarke and Mick Jones up front.
“I thought that was an amazing balanced team.”
Leeds have spent too long out of the top-flight since getting demoted in 2004.
However, Marcelo Bielsa has brought the feel-good factor back to Elland Road and it finally looks like Leeds will get back to the Premier League.
That will cement Bielsa’s status as a Leeds legend but he’ll still have a way to go before surpassing Revie.
Now, steering Leeds back to the top-flight and winning the Premier League? That would really push Bielsa into folklore.
There’s a long way to go yet but for a club that’s never lost its passionate fanbase, the right steps are being made, and it’s great to hear Redknapp talk about the true glory days at Elland Road.
