'Obviously something up' – Exclusive: Paul Robinson claims Leeds signing has off-pitch issues
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that Leeds have taken a “calculated risk” on signing Jean-Kevin Augustin, who he claims must have off-the-pitch issues or an attitude problem.
Augustin became the marquee signing for Leeds this January, on an initial loan deal with an option to make his move permanent if they get promoted.
The 22-year-old has a rich pedigree having played for PSG, Red Bull Leipzig and Monaco. However, he’s struggled to fulfill his early potential and will be hoping that Leeds is his springboard into the big time of the Premier League.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “I think Man United tried to steal him and it was Bielsa who turned his head.
“There are question marks for me though. He played for PSG as a youngster, PSG sold him for £14m. Why would PSG sell him?
Then he goes to Red Bull Leipzig and they shift him out on loan. Why? He’s not been starting for Monaco either.
“There’s obviously something up there, whether it’s his attitude or how he acts off the field.
“He’s obviously talented, he played for the France Under-21s, he’s an undoubted talent but that has to be nurtured under Bielsa.
“He’s perhaps matured and realised that Bielsa is the type of manager he needs to play for. It’s a risk but a calculated risk by Leeds.”
Augustin looks like he could quickly become a new cult hero for Leeds.
He spent the weekend ahead of his transfer liking tweets from Leeds fans and then laid into the Millwall side on Twitter for time-wasting in the game on Tuesday night.
But it was rejecting a late Man United offer that has made the entire Leeds fanbase fall in love with him. Let’s hope he can continue that love affair on the field.
