Graham Smyth: Leeds to listen to loan offers for attacker who was involved in PL

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth has said that Leeds United will listen to loan offers for Sam Greenwood this summer.

The striker made the bench for the Premier League game against Man United towards the end of the season, but didn’t make it onto the pitch.

He made his first-team debut in the FA Cup defeat against Crawley.

He was a standout for the title-winning Under-23s side, scoring 12 goals in 18 Premier League 2 games.

He has been shortlisted for the 2020/21 Premier League 2 Player of the Season award, along with Charlie Cresswell.

Smyth also said, “The YEP understands there was Championship interest in the 19-year-old’s services during the campaign but head coach Marcelo Bielsa wanted him to develop at the club.”

Leeds United

Many Leeds fans were calling for Greenwood to get a chance in the Premier League but this shows just how big a step up that is.

It seems like Marcelo Bielsa feels that a stint at a Championship club could help the development of Greenwood and it will be fascinating to see how he gets on at that level.

What is crucial is game time. If Leeds do let Greenwood leave on time they need to get his move right and ensure he goes to a club where he’s going to play regularly.

It’s going to be almost impossible to get guaranteed game-time at that level for a player with little senior experience, but that’s why the club selection needs to be spot on.

The next question will be whether any of the class of 20/21 are good enough to step up to the senior squad next season.

We’ll find out more when pre-season starts.
