Gjanni Alioski remembers Leeds United Premier League return on Instagram
Leeds United secured Premier League promotion for the first time since 2004 on this day in 2020 after West Brom lost 2-1 to Huddersfield Town.
Head coach Marcelo Bielsa led the Whites to the top-flight at the second time of asking, and they put in a top performance in their first season back, finishing in the top half of the league table.
Former Leeds left-back Gjanni Alioski remembers today fondly, taking to his personal Instagram account to post about it.
Never to be forgotten
Alioski left Elland Road after his contract expired at the end of last month, but he is not going to forget June 17, 2020 anytime soon.
The North Macedonian played a huge role in 2019-20 as we finally returned to the big time, scoring five goals and assisting three more in 39 Championship games.
Alioski had scored seven and assisted five in 44 games in 2018-19 as we missed out on a place in the play-offs final, and he will remain a Leeds hero despite spending just four seasons at Yorkshire.
The 29-year-old is currently a free agent after rejecting the Whites deal despite Victor Orta’s best efforts, but he is not short of suitors and should make a decision on his next club soon.
While he is no longer around, Alioski will forever support Leeds and he surely holds a special place in the hearts of most fans.
We have since brought in Junior Firpo from Barcelona as his replacement, and the Spaniard is expected to hit the ground running given his huge potential and talents.
Leeds are in the Premier League to stay after almost two decades away, and we are looking to push for Europe next season and going forward.
A couple of quality additions are expected this summer to boost our chances, and we can trust the club to deliver.
