Leeds decided against recruiting new No 10 due to Rodrigo’s surge in form
Leeds United decided against recruiting a new number 10 due to Rodrigo’s surge in form during the tail end of last season according to Phil Hay.
Writing on The Athletic website, Hay reports that the club were keen on replacing Pablo Hernandez after the Spaniard left at the end of last season.
However, Leeds have ditched that plan and are now looking to strengthen other areas with that budget.
The former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist said: “Leeds thought for a while about recruiting a new No 10, pre-empting Pablo Hernandez’s departure for Spain, but cooled on the idea after Rodrigo’s surge in form towards the end of last season set him up for a stronger second year.
“Tyler Roberts forced the issue too by improving to the point where Leeds were happy to extend his contract.
“Even with Hernandez gone, Bielsa had his two options for that position and the club diverted their budget elsewhere.”
Rodrigo joined Leeds in a club-record deal last summer from Valencia, and he failed to hit the ground running upon arriving at Elland Road.
The £26million signing scored only three times and weighed in with one assist in his first 22 Premier League games, but he was on fire as the campaign drew to an end, bagging four goals and an assist in the last four fixtures.
While it was too little, too late as the 30-year-old missed out on Spain’s European Championship squad, he has a chance of returning to the team should he kick off next season from where he stopped.
We are expecting him to, and Leeds and Bielsa have shown faith in him by not signing a new No 10.
Many fans were afraid we got a flop, but Rodrigo proved them wrong in the end, and he now has to show that he can be the perfect replacement for Hernandez.
The genius of the Spaniard played a huge role as we secured promotion, and we could do with a similar creativity in the final third going forward.
Rodrigo has everything it takes to finally take the Premier League by storm after that late show, and he has everything it takes to follow in the footsteps of his countryman and establish himself as a Whites hero.
